If you have plans of extending your stay in UK and you carry the General Tier 1 visa, then a number of conditions should be met. You can apply for an extension in UK if you are already in the country under the highly skilled program and you want to extend your permission to stay in UK under the old category. You are also allowed to apply for an extension if you are in the country under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme and you want to extend your stay and of course, you are allowed to make the switch to this new category.
The length of extension is of course subject for approval and the time is on a case to case basis. For example, if you are given the ‘leave to remain’ as part of the highly skilled worker category, then you will be given the chance to work in the country for a maximum of three years. It is suggested that when that period is about to lapse, you need to re-apply to extend once again.
As mentioned there are a number of conditions that should be met before you can be allowed to extend your stay. One condition is that you should have no recourse to public funds. The chances of having an approved application also increase if you have been given entry clearance or the leave to enter as a highly skilled worker or a post-grad doctor or dentist. If you are a sponsored student, then the office should receive word that you are given the permission to stay as well.
